They may not have magical powers but they do have trillions* of dollars, the most advanced weapons systems in the world, national security law (which makes some gov officials above the law), secret police (CIA, NSA) and covert technology that is always a good 30 years ahead of what is available in the public sphere. Arthur C. Clarke once said that any technology sufficiently advanced would appear as magic to people at a less advanced stage.
Oh - they also control the media through clandestine programs like Operation Mockingbird, make policy outside democratic scrutiny at think tanks and various private clubs, have total contempt for "the masses" and follow the philosophies of such madmen as Machiavelli and Leo Strauss.
Put it all together and you have a recipe for outright Hitlerian tryanny, which is slowly unfolding around us.
*in the late 90s alone, over $3 trillion went unaccounted for at the Pentagon and to this day no one knows what happened to the money. Did it go in officials' pockets? Is it being used to fund covert operations, foreign militaries, foreign coups, mass global propaganda, "terrorist" front organizations? It obviously went somewhere and that is just a small fraction of the money that circulates illicitly
