It seems to just have been just a freak accident - there are only 2 stingray deaths reported in Australian history..
The guy seems to have been someone who knew what he was doing around animals. Sure there are a list of minor wounds, but these are really to promote the show and its conservation message.
No-one really expected him to go like this, hence the public shock and media outpourings.
