We've setup a ton of members areas using WP as the CMS. WP makes a great CMS for somewhat simple backends serving mostly image galleries, static pages, video pages such as solo sites but
definitely requires the right modifications to make it work correctly and securely.
I'd look into it further, sj_swank. I used WP + Gallery on a few solo sites a few years ago and it worked perfectly after we did the right things to it.
