actually I think the real reason tubes are killing the current business model is that they update daily with alot of new content. In todays web world the end user expects constant updates(look at digg, facebook, any news site, ect.) No one ever seems to talk about that.
I see constant threads about the length of videos on tube sites, but in reality, if you look at video views on a site like redtube or any other, I don't see any blatant correlation between length of the video and the views it gets...although there seems to be a very relevant correlation between the length of the videos to how many visitors a tube site gets...which leads me to believe that people want the long videos for some "cred" reason, but are not actually watching an entire 22 min porn.
Speed of delivery is obviously is a big concern, but with most of the big programs I don't see that as much of a problem. When I first started doing the porn thing, I was pretty excited about the growth of the industry, but now it just seems that this industry just doesn't get it. I stay informed and check out this site, porn news sites, and review sites-- but all I see is companies doing the same thing they have been doing for years--let's put out another MILF site that updates once a week--or let's put another pornstar site with chicks gettin from guys with big dicks----it's all the same.
I worked in sales for a long time...the golden rule was always--give the consumer 3 options, more than 3 options and they get confused and don't buy---in this industry people seem bent on giving the consumer 60 options in an effort to get them to buy, and then they try to get them to buy more stuff that wasn't advertised when they checkout(cross-sales.) Can you imagine going to home depot to pick up some stuff you needed and then at the checkout counter, the cashier throws in some stuff into your cart and says to you - " well, if you don't want those things you can take them out of your cart."
In the last few years, nobody has tried a truly different approach(there are a few companies that have unique products that I promote and actually make money on...i.e. virtualgirl) ....if this industry is going to survive like it was years ago, people need to innovate like they used to, not keep putting out the same product over and over again.
sorry for this rant, but I used to be excited about where this industry was going(I am getting out--working on a mainstream multiplayer game at the moment)...I have worked in a ton of different businesses (managed restaurants in boston and new york, worked as an annuity specialist at a brokerage firm, did sales and marketing at a drum company, and toured the country as a drummer)...but I have never seen an industry as whole so clueless as to what's going on.
I don't remember who said this, but this quote is the most accurate quote to describe the current state of this industry.
insanity = doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results
