I'll opine that man needs religion / war / strife or some other unhappy shit to advance; whether we do it as a whole against a giant asteroid or against one another. Crockett brought up a good point about war bringing about technological advances; we owe a lot to war-tested medicine in our daily lives, for instance. If this planet were a world filled with a bunch of happy people, why innovate? Curiosity's great and all, but it seems the drive to be better than someone else is a great factor at innovating.
