Also, in this day and age, I think it would be far more devastating to the US if Texas were to secede, and Texas would flourish. I've only lived here a few years, so this is not lifetime Texan talk either - I'm from Cali.
1. Oil (2nd most of any US state, next to Alaska)
2. NASA (mission control)
3. Port of Houston (most foreign tonnage of any US port)
4. Very well armed populace
