Never had an issue with people in France. When I was hitchhiking around the country I met a lot of people and they were always very pleasant and informed. A few even bought me lunch just so they could spend some time visiting with an American.
The only thing I ever found odd was that in Paris,especially around the left bank guys would piss in the street at night while walking between clubs.
They don't know how to make a decent automobile. That's clearly a negative.
