Very sorry to hear about your friend. It is indeed hard to imagine what their minds are going through in those final moments because it's so non instinctual. Something bubbles within them that is usually triggered with a panicked sense of impending doom and they really actually think there's no way out and they world would be better off without them.

The poor family. This may sound twisted, but they will at least have alot of support during the holidays and they will probably be in shock to the point where it won't hit them too hard for a few months. Then the support is gone, it's yesterdays news to outside friends and family, and they are left with a lifetime of mental torture and guilt.
