Probably better that you didnt end up harming him though. If it does ever happen again then do like others are saying and call the police and have them file a report if not take him to jail.
hands on neck is far worse than a punch to the face. there is a life line there and if thats what he goes to over an argument, then imagine true life tribulations coming about... she will end up dead...
at the very least, have a stern talk with him ... and i mean stern, as in scaring the every living shit out of him... the butcher knife thing sounds about right...
