It's possible to make money off twitter but it is still apples and oranges comparing an established $26 billion dollar company with a worldwide presence grossing $3 million off Twitter compared to Joe Webmaster trying to squeeze change out of twitter users.

I won't knock it though. I think the people that are converting off Twitter are using the same model - simply increasing their online exposure by having a Twitter account. In addition to posting updates on their website, they can keep customers and potential customers updated closer to real-time using Twitter. This could encourage somebody who might not join a static site to think about it doing so.

Spammers, as usual, are probably making some money. The Twitter account I opened 3 weeks ago got its first spam today. I've only followed one person and I assume it's through their account that the spammer found my account.
