Coolio - just so you know, I'm new to the scene as well. And so far I'm enjoying every day of it.
I work full time as a web developer at a digital agency in London... when I get home, i put in a little time to update the site.
When things begin to get real busy at work - I publish a load of content that is embargoed / set to go live at set dates.

Updating content on a regular basis actually helps build site popularity. And I write all the content i publish - except the RSS content feeds.

I realise you can't write all the content for your site - and it was a smart move to hire a writer to get things started. But you should put in the time when your up and running, just to get the feel of it and to get better at it as well!

With regards to linking - my existing blog doesn't contain any skimming - all links are direct to galleries.
I just hate getting jerked around by sites that send me to an entirely different site - than was advertised. I find myself ditching such sites in a heart beat.
With that said - link trading can be beneficial for your site also - so long as you keep it to a certain percentage.

While on the topic of SEO - it may be an idea to request hard linking to other mainstream sites.
This increases your validity amongst search engines like google.

I have a number of hard links to TGPs or blogs... and they hard link back to me in return.

One thing that needs addressing on my site are adverts... there simply aren't enough.
That's good and bad... good because it's clean. Bad because it lowers the potential for sales. I'll be addressing that this week!
