We have the right to protect ourselves up here in Canada, but don't seem to have the issue with gun crime like you do down in the USA. The issue isn't people having guns, it's people who have no clue how to handle guns having them in the US. It isn't a criminal vs citizen scenario.
And I have to disagree with you on the '18yr old getting an ak47 so it ain't working' comment. If they had a whole bunch of 18yr olds getting ak47s, then I'd agree, but one guy getting his hands on an assault rifle is an anomaly, not an epidemic.
