If they stopped putting in new rigs or worse closed them down, this state would be in the same financial position as california. While this spill, which is the first time I can recall this ever happening here, will affect the seafood industry and cause us to lose revenue there, it is just a drop in the bucket to state revenue that would be lost if the oil went away.
You must not keep up with politics/govt much. The price of oil per barrel can make our break our state. When it drops below $50 a barrel for a long period of time the state loses ton of money and doesn't have enough for everything. Imagine if we stopped producing it all together .
