Cloverfield is an awesome movie - one of my top-10 favorites for sure. The shaky-cam ADDED to the effect.
And by the way - watch the very last scene (the last section of video tape not recorded-over). Keep your eyes on the water in the backround, near the horizon, top-right of the screen.
