Some people (such as Stalin or Hitler) decide to do "whatever it takes" to achieve their goals. The result is they do more harm than good, much more harm than good.

In life, it's more important *what you dont do* than *what you do*.

If you dont achieve your goals and end up starving, homeless on the street, then you only hurt yourself and maybe (indirectly) some people in your family. But if you steal from/kill half of the people to benefit the other half of the people, then you are killing/destroying society ....... even if the goals are noble such as more jobs (for the survivors) or more food (for the survivors). That's why religion has been moderately successful and somewhat resilient. Most religions teach that following rules is more important than outcomes (getting what you want). Sports are similiar. Players who believe in "our victory, through any means" are promoting a system which leads to short-sighted selfishness and eventual destruction as players destroy each other to achieve their goals (win).
