Judaism is not a race because Jews do not share one common ancestry. For instance, Ashkenazi Jews and Sephardic Jews are both "Jewish." Of course you are right. I know very well that the term "Jew" does not refer to a "race" but so many people do use it that way and in fact, antropologist have virtually done away with the term "race" as it is essenitally meaningless. The rule I quoted does seem to be the best fit though, I think.
