One of the reasons stated above is sensitivity to voltage fluctuations. The other is being careful in disconnect. I use USB Safely Remove (
http://safelyremove.com/) program to shut down an external. You cannot hot swap them.
I have also started buying external enclosures that have a fan now. That goes a long way to dropping temps.
