It can happen. More than likely the drive was defective in some way when it was manufactured. But you should also make sure your cooling system is in good shape as well as your power supply since these can also cause drive failure. Especially if this is a replacement hard drive. As for your data, you know what I'm going to say here regarding backups don't you?
