Being very poor must suck. But few of us are that.
However I spent a week with a family of rice farmers in N. Thailand and lived in their village. Never met so many happy people.
My Brother lives in Socal in San Jaun Capistrano. When I stay with him I'm shocked how few of his neighbors I know, how few greet you and the general atmosphere of the place. All bloody grumpy in pursuit of their next dollar.
We now live in a village in Czech and it's not the richest place on the planet, not the 3rd world either, but everyone is happy. People you don't know say "Good Day" as you pass them on the street. They're polite, friendly and warm.
I suppose it's about expectations and desires. Some have enough, some will never have enough.
