Public and private opinion will often be different but I guess people will fall into 1 of 5 categories.
1. Will boycott "out of principle". Some will be genuinely against it morally, others because they can't afford to backup all of their domains at the expected prices.
2. Will dismiss it as being just another pointless .co, .mobi, or .tv
3. Will quietly protect key domains, but not go on a speculative purchasing spree.
4. Will secretly try to pickup untaken keyword domains that they can piggyback on the dotcom of.
5. Wait for somebody to acquire one of "their" domains, and use lawyers to get it for free.
Number 3 for me.
