I can tell you from experience doing both never worked. You have to choose one or the other. Going at it 50% of the time even on your own just doesnt cut it. But the short term sacrifice not having that pay cheque coming in is worth the risk going for that freedom of working for yourself.

The problem with my field is its driven based on clients - PPC & SEM. I either work directly with a company or two and manage their accounts, have clients of my own or lease my technology to other agencies.
So ideally, id be nice to just sell that off and find something that does not involve managing a team of 14 morons or dealing with annoying clients
