I've been in this house a little over two years now and have never put any salt in. When I open it, it's all solid and hard as a rock. When we had the water turbidity tested, they added some kind of acid purifier and said everything was fine after that.

I have a feeling it's not "fine."

How often do you have to put the bags of salt in them?
