Is your throat dry when you wake up or do you feel like you are choking on spit or something?
Not to mention, I am a smoker so that could be my problem. I don't know.

You said yours only happens when you sleep on your back, and every few weeks. Silly question, do you have a nightmare about something pressing on your chest before it happens? It could be night terrors...
