Not sure about this exact case but the simple masses have always been the toys of the higher ups throughout history.
It has only become more obvious in recent times through the availability of more information to us simpletons.
While being manipulated through religion to do as told in the past, things have changed to mass manipulation and instilling fear through media.
Something that does stand out with the USA though compared to more progressive countries in Europe is the "patriotic thinking".

Not too long ago it was the communists and their ideology that you embraced if you did not accept the given American agenda and information as fact.
The farce of voting in America is also just ridiculous. A total clown show. Not democracy.
