I don't even use one anymore myself, i have done so well with those upright chicken roasters (the ones that people normally use for beer chicken). I don't use beer these days, I mix in water with lemon wedges which keeps things more moist.
I just toss them in there and forget about them for about 40 minutes and baste them with apple juice towards the end.. comes out golden brown and fantastic.

Yeah getting the heat even, is a big factor, even the "blackened" chicken tasted great

I have the beer can chicken stand and make those from time to time.
