His short stories are a work of art. Best was his satire of Poe's Premature Burial, where he chases a man who ruined the woman he loved then spent his life looking for the man.
Can't find the story, but the gist was,
While working at a morgue, a body rings the bell, tied to their hand to let attendents know someone isn't dead. Twain, the night man goes in to investigate. Twain finds the man he's be searching for. He strangles the man and the last line is something about for hundreds of years, no bell has ever rung.
