I would say that you should do a combination of both. Break up the back links and toss them to the feeder websites so that those websites will gain more juice and in turn provide more link juice towards your main site. But you should also be continuing to give back links to your main site for the keywords that you are specifically trying to rank for. The more diverse of a link package you have the better it will appear in Google's eye.

For the feeder sites I would recommend that you stay within similar keywords or exact keywords, as relevancy is very important in ranking
