He's lucky he doesn't live in this corner of the glorious EU. The regional gov introduced a new "divorce tax" (unofficially known as the "misery tax"). The official explanation is they want to "encourage a warm and social society" and thus discourage people from getting a divorce. Result: if you sell your house so you can divide the money between you and your soon to be ex, you end up paying twice the amount of taxes you normally would when selling property.
