Keep it simple. As few header-browser "instructions" as possible (stuff like content expiry, author, revisit...). Make sure every word in the title, keyword and description metas are actually in the body of the page.

Whether or not the spambot approach works, it's temporary. You will get penalized in the end.

Get hard in-bound links, use blogs, twitter, fan forum posts, Tumblr or other social media, do A-B-C link trades, not recips,

The more organic the better. SEM is long-term - it won't get you instant results, but they gather steam after a while....
