Its not hard to reach page one if you work in a niche. A lot harder if you're after generic terms. Page three for "Porn" might not be bad. Page three for "Balloon fetish porn" is basically useless.
I have Google set up to show me 50 results per page, so once I hit page two of the results I often find interesting sites - but that's not a good place to be in the listings if you want traffic and profits.
In all honesty, if my sites aren't listed "above the fold" on page one of Google's SERPs, I just let them sit there and I never update them. I'm very niche oriented, though.
