For resorts and the like, I usually book directly with the resort after researching around. I call the booking line, tell them I can get it for 'x' rcost at 'y' website and can they do any better. Never had any place that can't at least match the lower price.
For flights, I use Kayak.com or Expedia.com 90% of the time. The "this site is cheaper" method isn't as successful with airlines.
