Tuna lasts for more than a year, same with caned beans and corn. Soup is always handy to have. Canned fruit while heavy in sugar also lasts more than a year. Granted it's not a fresh diet but it's FOOD in case of an emergency. It means you can take care of yourself.
Every year when there are holiday food drives I rotate out some old and buy new. A hundred bucks goes a long way.
