(This, btw, is the only reason I have firearms. While I found it highly unlikely that a riot would ever break out in my hometown, if it does, or if society breaks down the police are unable to protect me, I will be.)



So when police make a mistake at 4am in the dark because they believe they have cornered suspect that is killing cops and others, it's bad but when a seventy year old man kills an intruder and becomes judge, jury & executioner it's perfectly acceptable.

While I'm perfectly fine with a homeowner shooting someone who has broken into his home, he could have fired a few warning shots and scared them off instead of taking a man's life for a petty crime.

At the very same time I could not imagine being a cop - in the pitch black with a firearm stripped to your hip and an assault rifle within reach, knowing that at any moment you might be attacked or shot. Cops make mistakes. This was a horrible accident.
