For shared I'd recommend the $15 per month Hostgator 'unlimited' package. I've had a shared account with them for years, it's fast and works well.
So as you know that I'm being honest, I'll also tell you what they're not good at. Never buy a domain through them, renewals don't work well. Also so as you know I'm not trying to sell, I'll tell you that their VPS is OK, the live support superb, but the VPS has never been as good as I would have expected given the high standard I have experienced on the shared.

Another point with Hostgator, make sure you use their live support, don't bother with emails and stuff. The customers who complain tend to be the ones who emailed, instead of using live support.
