I have both the S4 and the iPhone 5. The iPhone is a superior piece of hardware. There is no debating that. If you want your phohne to work, iOS does it. The only issues I've had have come after jailbreaking it and fucking around with it. I am running the latest iOS 7 developer beta and it quite nice.
Android is more flexible, that doesn't apply to the average user. But if you want to do something to change the look and feel of your device, it's fairly easy. This is where you want to be. This is actually the only reason I bought this phone. I can do what I want with this, so that I'm not fucking up my iPhone.
If you want the superior device, I say iPhone. The S4 is nice. I'd consider the new Moto X as well.
I'd also consider the Moto X. It looks like nice hardware. Nokia's is nice if you want to dive into Windows Phone.
