I use zwave for lighting. Can control everything from my android devices. I mounted a few tablets around the house and of course always have my phone with me. When I turn a light on or off I also have it setup so my main server speaks the command over my home speakers. "Living room chandelier on." The only expensive part is the light switches. They also have plug in modules for lamps or whatever else you want to control. They also do thermostats and door locks.
