When the rocket propelled grenade hits the grating, it blows up before hitting the actual armor. Just because it looks silly, doesn't mean it doesn't work.

Hell at the start of Iraq, the US didn't have armored Humvee's and soldiers often self built their own armor systems.

They are simply trying to mimic what the US figured out in Iraq with the metal grating that stops the rocket propelled grenades.

Example of how the US military does it. It's a cheap and simple method to defeat a cheap weapon system that is capable of taking out the APC if not for the make shift grating armor.
