I don't know what the history of Western civilization would have been like in the absence of the powerful Church of Rome, whether we'd have been better or worse off. There's a lot of blood on the hands of Christianity throughout history right up until the present day.

don't forget all of those social structures had religion at their core, plus they all crumbled and a lot was lost, enter the medieval period.
I don't think the point was monotheism in particular, more the structure that arose from religion, based on principles of goodness.
