It is fishing. The whole process is totally the same to the point where you either release your catch or kill and keep it. As the whole point in most forms of recreational fishing is not to get food on the table, it really doesn't make that much difference whether you keep the catch or not.
Our ancestors didn't fish that much with a rod and a line, because it isn't very good way to get food on the table and with energy efficient way. Today's fishing is mostly just for the fun and the eating part is more like just a by-product.
So in simple; it serves the purpose of a hobby, recreational activity. And the ego part would be just as fine. I don't care that much about people's motives for what they do for leisure, as long as it isn't particularly harmful activity, and this isn't.
