Because Russia is a very large and rather cold place and there is a lack of infrastructure outside the big cities. So our population lives in a very compact way (you can see it on the night light map). 1/3 of the country is located above the Arctic Circle. Also keep in mind that Russia is the biggest country in the world while our population is more than 2x times less than in the States. Australia would be a good example for the comparison. They all live in just a few cities and a whole their continent is almost unpopulated (look at the map again). Almost the same applies to Canada and Alaska.
