In my country men are able to give blood 4 times and women 3 times per year. No monetary compensation is ever paid out, but you can choose a gift for yourself or send a teddy bear or other toy to hospitalized kids.
I am, for some reason, very sensitive to needles and I have fainted more than once when giving blood. So I end up going in 2-3 times per year, tell them that I might faint and it's written in my journal too. They usually offer me a bed with a belt, so that if I faint, I can't fall down and I take it most of the times. I really do not like going in but since I am otherwise completely healthy, there's really no reason for me not to go. Being scared and possibly fainting is not dangerous and I can work with that a few times per year to help out.
