I can see how some people might say if he had not gone public with this information and Clinton gets elected then there turns out to be some damning information in them, it makes him look like he withheld the information to help her get elected. If he does go public, like he did, it makes him look like he is trying to torpedo her campaign. No matter what he did, someone won't be happy.
To me, the proper way to have handled this would have been to keep quiet until they had a chance to look at the email and determine the nature of them. If the election happens before they finish, so be it. If they eventually determine there is a smoking gun in these emails they could go after her no matter if she won the election or not.
As I have said many times, I don't support Clinton, I do think she is corrupt, but to me this just smells like a political game. If the shoe were on the other foot and it was Trump in this situation I'm sure his supporters would be calling for Comey's head.
