I like a nice South Australian Shiraz. It's not cheap, but it's definitely an instance of you get what you pay for. We typically pick up a couple of bottles of Penfolds or Henschke or similar ($500+ per bottle), though you can get some awfully nice mid-range South Australian Shiraz / Cab Sauv wines in the $200 to $300 range from Barossa Valley, Hunter Valley, Eden, or McLaren Vale, among others.
The above are easily some of my favourite wine regions.
That said, I had a Chilean Malbec which turned my head. I forget the name, but it was every bit as good as the Malbecs I've had out of Argentina.
Anyway, my wife and I enjoy a glass of red wine. But this is the time of year when I buy a couple of bottles of a more premium wine than what we enjoy throughout the rest of the year.
