This right here is why you will never understand.
Five Guys burgers started in 1986, but didn't franchise until 2003. No one heard of them before 2000. In and Out Burger, on the other hand, started in the 1940s. Forty years before Five Guys burgers stared their first restaurant, In & Out became a tradition in California.
I didn't understand In & Out either when I first moved out there. Okay, it's a cheese burger. Its slightly better than McDonald's. My wife doesn't remember going to McDonald's as a kid, but she remembers going to In & Out. My step father couldn't name the local McDonald's today right now, but he can tell you the first In & Out burger he ever ate at sixty years ago - it's still there.
It's not about a cheeseburger. It's about history.
The east coast has it's own thing - White Castle. Oddly enough I've never been to one no less seen one. But all of my family back home talks about it.
Then again, I've never seen a Five Guys either.
