Kind of like Smashing Pumpkins during and post Meloncollie and the Infinite Sadness. Once they moved away from the low end, crunchy riffs and got more experimental that was the beginning of the end. Yes, they were around many years but released nothing which could match Gish or Siamese dream as just good, pure rock. It was so sad to watch it happen and I'm still waiting for them to get back to their roots of basically rocking my ass off.

When it comes to radiohead, they got too far away from straightforward song writing and became just plain....weird. There's flashes of that early vibe here and there in the newer stuff, but it's largely inaccessible for me. But I'm not crazy about seeing my favorite bands evolve too much. That's just me.

I was loving the new Metallica album because I feel like they lost their balls with the black album in the early 90's (post And Justice for All), and have been nutless ever since. Hardwired was as close to Kill Em All and Ride the Lightning as I've heard in years, and they could gone ever further with it.
I thought Kid A was more like Ok Computer than it was different from it, but it does signal a departure of sorts for the band. They did get more experimental and just strange odd. I will agree that their newer stuff isn't as good as the older stuff and I sometimes skip a song here or there on the album, but I think they are still a great band, especially live.

I have always loved Metallica. And Justice for All is one of my favorite records. I am one of those people who really liked the black album, but it was different and "softer." Hardwired is fantastic. It is them returning to what they once did and worrying less about writing songs that can get on the radio. I saw them live with Guns N Roses, one of the best concerts I have ever been to.
