I ran a 178k account all legit followers, sold it. Now within a few months I am already catching Emma and her @IloveSkypeSex account, again, for the 3rd time

^^ This is all sage advice. Seriously, the keys to a successful Twitter account (as well as Tumblr) is to put out relevant content, along with an occasional retweet of related content. Actually looking human by acting human and engaging with your audience is a major win on Twitter/Tumblr.
Impressions are important, but engagement is the key. You can get a billion impressions, but unless you've got a decent rate of engagement (retweets, clicks, likes, replies), above 1-2%, those impressions aren't that meaningful.
