The number of people on minimum wage here is small, very small. My daughter is at work now doing a summer job in a restaurant. She's getting paid more for her job than the minimum. She's 15.

The reason is simple, supply and demand. Here in Czech, we have a real unemployment rate of around 5%. In the States, it's rigged so only those who fit a narrow criteria go unemployed. The rest go int different forms of unemployment.
Even so, given that you are right. There's a lot more to life than work.
