The mainstream media reaches 100% of Americans in one way or another (TV, radio, print). The establishment elite can easily control that since so few companies own all of it.
Then along comes the alternative web media. They don't have the market penetration, but social media sharing and "trending" lists puts the alt media into the mainstream...... and that was a big problem for the left.
