?When we fight, we win?: Internet celebrates after Virginia Democrat beats GOP incumbent

Over a month after the already-historic wins by Democrats in the Virginia House of Delegates, the race garnered even more media attention Tuesday after a recount declared Democrat Shelly Simonds the winner of her seat by a single vote over the GOP incumbent.

Simonds win shifts the balance of power in the House of Delegates out of Republicans? hands for the first time in 18 years ? and naturally, Twitter was in a celebratory mood.

Simonds defeated Republican incumbent David Yancey, who has held the seat to represent Newport News since 2011. The final tally: 11,608 for Simonds and 11,607 for Yancey.

Prior to the recount, Yancey had led by 10 votes.

"With this critical win, Virginia Democrats will add another brick in our expanding blue wall as the DLCC and state Democrats fight back against detrimental policies peddled by the Trump administration and state Republicans," Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Executive Director Jessica Post said in a statement.

Virginia Democrats have declared victory after victory in 2017. Simonds' win means the party flipped 16 seats in the House of Delegates, leading to a rare 50-50 tie in a chamber that has been held by Republicans since 1999. Danica Roem became the first openly transgender person to be elected to a state legislature. And Ralph Northam beat Ed Gillespie in the state's gubernatorial race.
