Sounds like Norwegians came to the U.S. looking for opportunity.
That time period for "poor, huddled masses" was BEFORE the welfare state in the U.S. was ever created.
Hell, income tax was still unconstitutional at that time (Congress had to amend the constitution to CREATE federal income tax).
So yeah, that poem (which is NOT part of the Statue of Liberty...it's a plaque from a poetry contest) about "poor, huddled masses" was never written at a time when it meant taking money out of American citizens families and giving it to immigrants from SHITHOLE countries who will go directly onto welfare.
Meanwhile...if you drive down side streets here in Vegas you see thousands of homeless AMERICAN citizens who can't get any help.
